Broken Garage Door Spring

What’s Happening

A broken garage door spring means your door has lost the mechanical force that does most of the heavy lifting. Without a working spring, the opener motor – or your own arms – are suddenly carrying a door that can weigh 150 to 300 pounds on its own. The door won’t open fully, will feel brutally heavy, or won’t move at all.

Call (254) 602-5116

Springs are the hardest-working part of the whole system. Every time your door goes up or down, the spring either winds tighter or releases that stored energy. Residential springs are typically rated for a set number of cycles – and when that count is up, the spring breaks, usually without much warning. You might hear a loud bang from the garage. You might just walk out in the morning and find the door sitting on the floor with a gap in the coil you can see from across the room. Either way, the door is out of service until the spring is replaced. This is not a job to attempt yourself – springs operate under extreme tension and can cause serious injury if handled without the right tools and training. Call your local Brock Garage Door Repair team and let a trained technician handle it.

Why It Happens

The Spring Reached the End of Its Cycle Life

Standard torsion springs are built for a finite number of open-close cycles. Most residential springs hit that limit somewhere between seven and ten years of regular use, depending on how often the door moves. When a spring breaks from normal wear, you’ll typically see a clean break – the coil splits into two separate sections. If your door is more than seven years old and the break looks like a clean separation in the middle of the coil, this is almost certainly the cause.

Rust and Corrosion Weakened the Metal

Moisture gets into garages through rain, humidity, and temperature swings. Over time, rust forms on the coils and eats into the metal, creating weak points that fail well before the spring’s rated cycle life. If you look at the spring and see reddish-brown coating along the coils – especially near the break – rust is likely the reason it went early. Garages in humid climates or near the coast tend to see this more than dry-climate homes.

The Spring Was the Wrong Size for the Door

Springs are sized by door height, door weight, and cable drum diameter. When a previous installer put in a spring that didn’t match the door’s actual specs, the spring works under more stress than it was built for and fails faster. If your spring broke within a few years of a prior repair or door installation – and that work was done by someone other than a trained technician – improper sizing is worth asking about. A technician can measure the door and verify whether the replacement spring is correctly matched.

Lack of Lubrication Increased Friction and Heat

A dry spring generates friction every time the coil winds and unwinds. That friction creates heat and accelerates metal fatigue. If you can’t remember the last time anyone applied lubricant to the spring, and the coils look dull and dry rather than slightly glossy, friction wear may have shortened the spring’s life. This is the most preventable cause of early spring failure – a small thing left undone that costs a full repair later.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop using the door. Do not try to force it open manually and do not run the opener motor against a spring that isn’t working. Straining the motor or trying to lift a door under full dead weight can cause additional damage – to the cables, the opener, and the tracks.
  • Look but don’t touch the spring. You can safely look at the spring from the floor of the garage to spot the break. A gap in the coil, a visible separation, or a coil hanging loose are all signs of a broken spring. Do not grab, pull, or prod the spring – it is under tension even in a broken state and can release suddenly.
  • Photograph the spring and the door position. A clear photo of the break location and the current position of the door helps the technician understand the full situation before they arrive, and it’s useful documentation for your records.
  • Check the cables while you’re looking. A broken spring sometimes pulls a cable off its drum. Look at the cables running along each side of the door. If one is slack, coiled on the floor, or clearly off the drum, note it – cable issues are repaired alongside the spring. Do not attempt to re-thread a cable yourself; cables are under tension too and require professional handling.
  • Call your local Brock Garage Door Repair team. A spring is not a homeowner repair. The stored energy in a garage door spring is significant enough to cause serious injury – broken bones, lacerations, or worse – when handled without proper tools and training. Get a trained technician on the job. Call (254) 602-5116 and a live person will answer, any time of day or night.

How We Fix It

When a technician from your local Brock Garage Door Repair team arrives, the first thing they do is assess the full door system – not just the broken spring. A spring failure often puts stress on the cables, the cable drums, and the bottom brackets, so those get checked before any parts come off the door.

The technician will identify the spring type (torsion springs run along a horizontal bar above the door; extension springs run along the tracks on each side), measure the door to confirm the correct spring specifications, and put a written price in front of you before any work starts. That number doesn’t move once you approve it. The broken spring is removed, the correctly sized replacement is installed and tensioned to factory spec, and the cables and hardware are inspected and adjusted. The door is then cycled several times and the balance is tested by hand.

This is resolved under our Garage Door Repair service, and if cable damage is found, Garage Door Cable Repair is handled in the same visit. Most spring replacements take under two hours. The repair is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise – in writing, on the paperwork you keep. If the repair fails within that year, we come back and correct it at no charge.
