Garage door opens slowly or unevenly

What’s Happening

A garage door that opens slowly or unevenly almost always points to one of three things: worn or unbalanced springs, a cable that has slipped or frayed, or a drive system that’s lost the power or lubrication it needs to move the door at the right speed. These aren’t cosmetic problems. Left alone, any one of them puts the door at risk of stopping mid-cycle, coming down unexpectedly, or damaging the opener motor beyond repair.

Call (254) 602-5116

The door isn’t supposed to fight you. A properly balanced, well-maintained door should glide up and come down at a steady pace, with the opener doing most of the lifting. When it slows, lurches, or rises higher on one side than the other, something mechanical has shifted – and the door is telling you exactly that. The good news is that a trained technician can usually spot the cause within the first few minutes on site.

Why It Happens

Spring wear or imbalance

Torsion and extension springs do the actual lifting. The opener just guides the motion. When one spring weakens or breaks – even partially – the door gets heavy on that side, and the opener strains to compensate, which is why you hear the motor working harder than usual. If the door looks visibly tilted when it’s halfway up, or if it creaks and jerks on one side, spring imbalance is the likely cause. Do not attempt to inspect, adjust, or replace springs yourself. These components store an enormous amount of mechanical energy under tension, and a spring that releases without control can cause serious injury. Stop using the door and call a technician.

Cable off the drum or fraying

Each side of the door runs a steel cable that keeps the panels tracking straight as the door travels up and down. When a cable slips off its drum or develops a fray, one side of the door rises faster than the other – giving you that slow, lopsided motion that looks wrong the moment you watch it. You may be able to see a cable hanging loosely from the drum at the bottom corners of the door, or notice the door sitting slightly crooked when it’s fully closed. Cables work under the same tension as springs. Identifying the problem visually is fine; touching them is not. This is a call-first situation.

Opener motor or drive system issues

LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman and other openers all use either a belt, chain, or screw drive to move the trolley. Over time, the drive can stretch, dry out, or develop worn gear teeth that cause the motor to push unevenly through the travel cycle. The sign here is usually a grinding or stuttering sound from the opener unit itself, rather than from the door panels. If the door moves fine when you disconnect the opener and lift it by hand, but lags or surges when the opener is engaged, the drive system is the place to look.

Lack of lubrication or debris in the tracks

This is the simplest cause and the one most often overlooked. Rollers dry out, hinges stiffen, and the tracks can collect grit that creates drag at certain points in the door’s travel. The symptom here is usually a consistent slow spot – the same hesitation in the same position every time the door opens. You might also hear a scraping or squeaking sound at that exact point. Unlike spring or cable problems, this one is sometimes owner-serviceable, but only after a technician has confirmed the tracks are clear, straight, and properly aligned.

What to Do Right Now

  • Stop using the door. A door that’s moving unevenly is putting extra stress on the opener, the cables, and the remaining good spring. Every cycle risks making a minor repair into a larger one – or causing the door to drop.
  • Disconnect the opener if the door is stuck mid-travel. Most openers have a red emergency release cord hanging from the trolley. Pull it to disengage the drive and lower the door by hand carefully. If the door feels heavy or won’t stay put on its own, leave it where it is and call immediately – it likely means the spring is compromised.
  • Take a short video before you call. A 20-second clip of the door in motion, showing the uneven travel, gives the technician a head start and helps confirm which components are behaving abnormally.
  • Look – don’t touch – the spring and cable area. Check whether any cables are visibly loose at the bottom corners, and whether the torsion spring above the door has a visible gap in the coil. These are useful things to report. They are not things to touch or adjust.
  • Note which side is slow and when the problem started. Did it come on gradually over a few weeks, or was it sudden after a cold night? That history helps the technician narrow the diagnosis before the truck even arrives.

How We Fix It

When your local Brock Garage Door Repair technician arrives, the first thing that happens is a full inspection of the springs, cables, drums, rollers, tracks, and opener drive – not just the part that looks broken. A slow or uneven door usually has one clear cause, but the surrounding components bear the extra load and often show wear as well.

Once the technician identifies the issue, you get a written price before any work starts. That’s the number on the invoice. It doesn’t move. If springs are the cause, the repair falls under our Garage Door Repair service. If a cable has slipped or frayed, that’s handled through our Garage Door Cable Repair. Opener drive problems are addressed under Garage Door Opener Repair. Most of these repairs complete in under two hours.

Every repair is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise, written on your paperwork before we start: if the repair fails within a year, we come back and correct it at no charge. Wade Mercer and the Brock team have operated under The Garrison Standard since 2001. The standard doesn’t bend.
